Brush Engineered Materials Inc. Announces Key Appointments at Its Wholly-Owned Subsidiaries

CLEVELAND, Sep 17, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Brush Wellman Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Brush Engineered Materials Inc., (NYSE:BW) announced today that its Board of Directors has appointed Glenn Maxwell, 49, to President of its Alloy Products business unit.

Alloy Products is the largest business unit within Brush Wellman Inc.

Mr. Maxwell now has senior management responsibility for Alloy Products' manufacturing, technology, supply chain and commercial activities. With domestic manufacturing operations in Elmore and Lorain, Ohio and Reading, Pennsylvania, Alloy Products manufactures and distributes high performance copper-based, nickel-based and aluminum-based alloys primarily for use in the electronics, energy, aerospace, tooling, heavy equipment and telecommunications markets. It also operates distribution centers in Detroit and Chicago.

Since May 2005, Mr. Maxwell has served as Vice President, Operations for Alloy Products. Earlier he served as Plant Manager of the Elmore manufacturing facility and Director of the Bulk Products Value Stream at the Elmore, Lorain and Reading locations.

Prior to joining Brush Wellman in 2001 as Strip Mill Manufacturing Manager of the Elmore plant, he had worked for 20 years at LTV Steel Corporation with his most recent position as Manager of Finishing Operations for the Cleveland Works.

Mr. Maxwell earned his bachelor's degree in industrial engineering at the University of Pittsburgh and also holds a Master of Science degree in management from Purdue University.

In conjunction with this promotion, John E. Scheatzle, Jr., 44, has been appointed Vice President, Operations for Alloy Products.

Since October 2003, Mr. Scheatzle has been Vice President and General Manager of Brush Ceramic Products Inc's operation in Tucson, Arizona. Brush Ceramic Products is a subsidiary of Brush Wellman Inc. Previously, he had served as Bulk Products Manufacturing Manager and Supply Chain Manager for Alloy Products at the Elmore facility. He joined Brush Wellman in 1996 after a number of years in project management and consulting for Accenture and in corporate management for a national retailer.

Mr. Scheatzle has a Bachelor of Science in business administration from the University of Akron and an MBA from Case Western University.

Additionally, Brush International, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Brush Engineered Materials Inc., announced today that it has appointed Richard L. Trate, as President. Brush International operates service centers in Germany, England, Japan and Singapore that primarily focus on the distribution of alloy products while also providing local support to portions of other subsidiaries of Brush Engineered Materials operating internationally.

In addition to his senior management role with the international businesses, Mr. Trate will oversee sales, marketing and technical services functions for Brush Wellman Inc.'s Alloy Products business unit.

Mr. Trate joined Brush Wellman (Japan), Ltd. In January 2006 as Managing Director, Asia/Pacific. Mr. Trate also currently serves as President of Brush Wellman (Japan), Ltd. Currently based in Tokyo, Mr. Trate will be relocating to the Cleveland, Ohio area.

Prior to joining the Company, he had worked for Carpenter Technology Corporation where he held several international assignments in India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Mr. Trate has a Bachelor of Science degree in business from the University of Michigan.
